But these are not 94,472 separate keywords. They stack into 62 distinct needs and 45,005 combinations of them -- and the demand hidden inside is enormous:
Three rings: need group, dimension, and the needs themselves. every arc colored by who wins it. Teal where a maker is the chosen answer, amber where a forum, store, vet or magazine is, grey where no maker can win by design.
Arc size = monthly search volume
Makers are present on 22.5% of winnable demand. They are the chosen #1 answer on four needs of sixty-two.

Someone typed your brand. Your own site should be #1 every time. Anything below #1 is an issue. to a marketplace, a retailer, or a forum sitting on top of your name.
monthly branded searches that return someone other than the brand at #1 — 35.3% of all branded demand, leaking by the million.
Each bubble is one winnable need-dimension. Right means big demand; low means makers rarely win it. Food Format, Life Stage, Health, and Dietetic land bottom-right: large demand, makers absent at the top.
Structural demand (best-of, recipes, how-to) and 22 unmeasured dimensions are excluded -- this plots only the demand a maker can win.
TOFU disscusions where Brands are absent.

Freshpet and Purina own the only two teal formats. Everywhere else the answer is a marketplace, a vet page, or a magazine.
The rare wins prove the 43 losses are losable, not barred.
The maker lines hug the floor across twelve health needs. Sensitive-skin: one breakout. Pancreatitis: two of ten rank.
Health is where a maker's claim is strongest -- a formulated product, not an opinion.

45,005 two-dimension pairs (3,061,960 searches) and 24,292 triples (1,355,570) -- stacked needs that map exactly to the shape of an AI prompt.
"Fresh dog food for a senior with a sensitive stomach" is the exact shape of an AI prompt. The deeper a buyer goes, the more makers appear on the page -- 76% at three needs -- and the wider the gap to being chosen.
How often each maker is cited as a source across seven AI engines -- only two of which are Google. The engines re-sort the order Google ranks them in.
The engines cite the makers in a different order than Google ranks them. That re-sort is the signal a maker can act on -- which of its pages the answer engines already trust.
AI citations measured June 25, 2026 across 7 engines via Ahrefs site-explorer-ai-responses-count. A whole-domain citation-as-source estimate, not a Google ranking. A dog-food-prompt-scoped view is the paid tracking layer.
The maker the engines cite first is not the maker Google ranks first. Whoever earns the citation gets chosen -- today on Google, tomorrow wherever the buyer asks next.

You have never seen your category like this -- not a keyword list, but a map of the needs you show up for and lose. Fifty-eight needs where a forum, a store, a vet, or a magazine is the answer. Four where a maker is.
Go back to where we started. Someone types "puppy food," and the seventh result is the biggest puppy-food maker on the board. That is not one embarrassing SERP. It is one need on a map you cannot unsee -- and you have a need like it for almost everything you make.
We measured it for dog food the same way we'd measure it for you -- the needs you already rank on, the entity that wins instead, and the gap between present and chosen. Pick a 15-minute slot below. Not a pitch. A map.
The engines that answer these questions will change. The questions will not. Whoever owns the answer to "what do I feed my puppy" gets chosen -- today on Google, tomorrow wherever the buyer asks next. Right now, in dog food, that is almost never the people who make the food.
